Raised in an innovative household, Joan Schwartz’s passion for creating began as a child. Nurtured by nature, she began her career as a pediatric nurse. Even while working and raising three children, Joan always made art an important part of her life. For over the past decade, she has focused on mixed media mosaics, seeking out training from top mosaic artists from around the world. Joan’s skillfully crafted works communicate her value for life, children and well-being. Through her art she is a committed supporter of Make- A-Wish Foundation, StarsGuitars through Beaumont Hospital and Doctors Without Borders, all of which are dedicated to helping children with life-threatening illnesses. Currently Joan promotes mosaics in the Metro-Detroit area and other U.S. cities by coordinating mosaic exhibitions and bringing in well-known instructors from the U.S. and abroad. Joan currently is a member of SAMA (Society of American Mosaic Artists), MAANZ (Mosaic Artists of Australia and New Zealand) and MAM (Mosaic Artists of Michigan)and Detroit Artist Market. Most recently Joan was instrumental in hosting the 2017 SAMA conference, bringing almost 300 mosaic artists to Detroit. Joan is a two time past ArtPrize participant, and her work has been juried into the highly competitive Mosaic Arts International in 2012, 2014, 2017 and 2018.
Joan’s studios is a warehouse of glass, metal, beads, clay and any other re-purposed material she can find. She has been collecting “stuff” for years, and probably would never have the need to make another purchase of materials, but that of course is not reality for Joan. Her journey as an artist has given her the opportunity to keep reaching new personal plateaus, to achieve personal growth and a recognizable style of her own.
